The origin of this variety dates back to the period of the Marquis and later the Duchy of Monferrato in Piedmont, but there is no definite information from before the late eighteenth century. Piedmontese grape in origin and spread, best expresses its character in Piedmont and Lombardy, but it is cultivated in many other areas, both in Italy and abroad; it is vinified in purity - especially in Albese and Monferrato - also in various blends in other areas. It is characterized by medium , pentagonal, five-lobed leaf; cluster of medium size, mostly pyramidal but also cylindrical; medium, ellipsoid, smooth berry with very waxy skin and deep blue. The ripening period is from mid-September to early October. It has medium and smooth vigor and steady and relatively abundant productivity.
